We wrapped up a four show run to Florida and Georgia with educational outreach at a performing arts high school in Jacksonville, FL. The outreach went really well- the kids were responsive and interested, and they understood what we were saying. Since it was a performing arts high school we could get more in depth as to what we were doing musically, which is a nice change of pace (our last few outreach programs were for lower elementary students). Teenagers are hard to handle- they're at that age where they rebel against parents and authority figures. It can be hard to get them to see you as a relatable person who was in their shoes not too long ago, and I think we managed it.
After the workshop, we drove about 5 hours and spend the night at an airbnb- but this one was on a horse farm. We stayed at a guest house on a pretty big property- the house had three bedrooms, two living rooms, and a kitchen/dining room and porch. The next morning there were four horses right across from the house! We went right over there, coffee in hand, and hung out with them. We also got to meet two BABY HORSES! They were so small and scared! One saw us and bucked away behind its mother where it stood trembling. There were a few adolescents, and breeds varying from petite Spanish horses to giant Irish stallions. To see such gentle, powerful animals up close was humbling. I've only been horse back riding once in my life, and I can count the experiences I've had with horses on one hand, so it's always great to get an opportunity like this. We'll definitely return to this airbnb if we're driving by Enoree, SC! Bonus- it's right off of the highway, so it's a great routing stay.
